Should I hire a CPA to do my taxes next year if my student loans are discharged? My bankruptcy attorney dragged his feet and had to reopen the BK before filing the adversary action in 2026.

At least you got it reopened. If they are forgiven through bankruptcy, no tax is due.

I understood that the discharged IDR student loan amount was treated as income as of 2026. It's a considerable amount, so I want to be prepared. The whole process has taken far too long. I made sure to explain the tax issue to the lawyer to avoid this possibility. It will still be months before this wraps up. I don't look forward to this hanging over my head until 2027.
